Moorfoot Win at Newtonmore 10 Miler

Rachel and I ran in the Newtonmore 10 mile road race on Saturday, the results are still to be published but Rachael won the ladies race in a fine time of 65 mins knocking at least 4 mins off her previous PB. I was 3rd male in a time of about 57:45. The route is a gently rolling out and back course which starts in the centre of Newtonmore heading through Kingussie before turning round at the Highland Wildlife Park.

We also both ran at the Deuchary Canter on Sunday (as did Russell, Mike R and Julia), again results to follow.

Cheers

Spotted at Chapelgill 2012

The Chapelgill Hill Race at the head of Glenholm near Broughton is one of the shortest races on the UK hill racing calendar at only 2.6km but it is described as “brutal” on the Scottish Hill Runners website with a relentlessly steep climb of 410m followed immediately by the reverse thigh-burning descent. That’s an average gradient of close to 1 in 3! But that didn’t deter 15 year-old Lucas Cheskin from Moorfoot Runners from lining up as the sole junior in the 52-strong field in the 29th running of the race on Saturday 17 March. It may not have been a vintage field behind the winner Internationalist Matt Sullivan from Carnethy (21.12) but Lucas showed most of the seniors in the race how it should be done with a fantastic 4th place finish in a time of 23.49, only losing out on 2nd , then 3rd , to more experienced descenders in the very final stages of the race.

Fellow Moorfoot and prolific racer Julia Connor was 2nd woman home in 29.16 with Steady Eddie Balfour 17th in 27.26. Alan MacDonald was also racing (time and position not confirmed...but he did report that he wasn't last !)

Mighty Deerstalker report

Another good showing from Moorfoot members at this years Mighty Deerstalker at Traquair. 1,602 people completed the 9 mile course, with 2000ft of ascent, and obstacles.

The race was dominated by Scottish Hill Running Champion Murray Strain of HBT. Darin continued his excellent set of results to make it onto the podium again with a strong 3rd place (only 11 seconds down on 2nd in 1:20.38). Colin broke into the top 10 for the first time, to finish 7th in 1:26.34, after having come 11th last year and in 2009 (which I was well chuffed with). Mike McGovern was strong on the first hill but dropped some placings to finish 22nd in 1:32.21.

Ruth McKean had a very strong run to finish 4th woman in 1:37.33 although she was just behind me on the first hill and I heard a rumour she made a wrong turn and lost some time, as if very easy to do in some of the forestry sections in the dark (as Mike will vouch for!).

Northumberland Half Marathon - Sunday 25 March 2012

There is a half marathon in Northumberland at Wallington Hall, not far over the Carter Bar a week on Sunday.

As part of my marathon build up I've entered it, so if any one fancies a lift please let me know. Details here: http://runnorthumberland.org/?p=49

"the course is undulating and has some fast downhill sections and steady climbs."
Although some fast times were recorded last year.

Entry closes on Friday.
Cheers
Colin

Moorfoots at Inter-Counties XC Championships (Birmingham)

Sarah - third from left - Silver Medalist at Inter Counties XC
There was a 4-strong Moorfoot contingent representing the East of Scotland at the Inter-Counties XC Champs at Birmingham on Saturday 10 March. This was also the final round of the UKA McCain XC Challenge.

In exalted company, Sarah McCormack had her best XC run of the winter with a strong 17th place in a field of 248 in the senior women’s race behind English champ Gemma Steel and Steph Twell, helping the East to team silver. Scout Adkin also came home with a team silver medal as part of the U-20 East team, her 48th place out of 144 behind rising star Emilia Gorecka meant she was the fourth and final counter for the East and made the long trip down from university in Aberdeen worthwhile.

Two of our recruits from Selkirk were also in action for the East with John McLean and Jack Stanners both having top-half finishes in the U-17 Men’s and U-15 Boys’ races respectively.
