Gala XC report

It was the second round of the Borders XC circuit today in Galashiels today. Chilly and foggy and very heavy underfoot but still lots of fun. A very strong turn out again and a very competitive field. For example the race was won in almost a identical time to last year and I recorded an almost identical time to last year but this year I came 30th whereas last year I was 18th, so it gives you sort of idea of the strength in depth. The race was run by Hector Haines (who recently beat the Jura hill race record that stood for 25 years!) in 21.42.

Kobe Stevens was the first Moorfoot home in a very credible 9th position for what I think is his first race in the senior cross country events. Results below and in full on the Borders XC website:

Moorfoots at Tinto Hill Race 2014

A dreich, damp November day for this year's race, with the rain arriving on queue as the start line assembled and cloudy and wet on the top...but another big turn out for this popular event.

Great top20 run by Lucas  in his step up to the senior race, and a sub40 by Benjamin in his first hill race.

Good runs too in their first Tinto outings by Dave Cheskin and Alan...

Juniors at Lasswade

Illness, cyclo-cross and blinkin' netball (!) meant a depleted but still healthy contingent of Moorfoot juniors at the annual Lasswade Cross-Country races at Gorebridge on Sunday.

Kobe Stevens’ 2^nd place in the 3.8mile U17 men’s race was the top individual placing on the day. In close contention from the gun, it was only in the final kilometre that the winner gained the upper hand with Kobe finishing with a wide margin over the rest in 23.20.

Also on the podium in the U13 Boys race over 2 miles was Craig Angus who finished strongly over the closing 300m to pull clear of the chasing challengers and secure 3^rd place in 12.30. Finlay Collins ran well for 10^th in 13.33.

And there was a team podium placing for the U11 Girls, the only age-group in which the club managed the required complement of three runners for the team prizes. Racing over 1 mile, Megan Hobbs had a strong run for 4^th in 6.38, Madeline Collins was 6^th in 6.53 and Holly Hobbs kept on well for 23^rd in 7.37, enough for 2^nd team overall behind Edinburgh AC. (Note to coach: The promise of Vimto sweets seems to be a great incentive!)

Lauder XC

The first of the Borders XC series took place at Lauder today. Lovely sunny conditions with a brisk wind and squelchy under foot with all the recent rain (but then again its a cross country so when is it not...). A very competitive field with a finisher every second when the pack was coming in.  With 263 runners in the senior race the race was won by Andy Fallas of Carnethy in 26.16 for 4 and a bit mile course. Moorfoot results below, and a very credible first outing for Craig Rendle in a Moorfoot vest being the team third counter.

A quick glance at the club results tells me that for the organising team competition Gala (56) is slightly in the lead followed the Moorfoots (60) and then Dunbar (69) so it looks like it would be a tight race for the organising team trophy  Overall it looks like Carnethy will romp it with 3 out of the top 4 in the first round and HBT going strongly too.

FYI the rules for the club trophy are as follows -
The “team” competitions, (Male and Female for Seniors), will be decided on the basis of overall finishing positions of the first three club runners per round for the BEST FIVE rounds added together.  There will be a trophy for the first team, (and should that not be one of the organising clubs, an additional team trophy for the first “organising club” team). 

Hill Runners - Kit Checks

For those running Tinto (and all hill races), be aware of the enforcement of kit checks - in particular note the Waterproof Jacket requirements

Last year, some runners were turned away at the start because they did not have minimum kit; this year, it is already being communicated that refunds will be provided to entrants if they have entered but cannot meet the requirements

Jedburgh Half and 10k

Wild conditions also greeed the Moorfoots who made it Jedburgh for the 10k and 1/2 marathon today, but there were some very good performances from Moorfoots. The wind meant the return legs were brutal and any pb aspirations were shot.

There were just over 400 runners in the half with a high quality field and the top 3 running 1.10 -1.12. Top moorfoot performance coming from Rachel Smith who finished as 8th woman in 1.33:56. The top male perforamce came from her other half James Britton finishing 11th in 1.20.57. Colin Williams (me) finished 1.25:00 in 26th.

With 300+ runners in the 10k Darin Dougal ran very strongly with a 7th in 36.27, followed by Mike McGovern 11th in 38.30 and were 1st and 2nd V40 respectively. Alan Elder was 46th in 45.36, 6th V50.
