World Sprint Triathlon Championship report by Mike Goddard

World Triathlon Championships (Sprint distance) 2024

Torremolinos, Spain

17 October 2024

Mike Goddard’s Ramblings

Introduction

This was my 9th world triathlon championship representing Great Britain in the age

group team, some Standard distance, some Sprint distance. I prefer and seem to do

better at the Sprint distance which is flat out the whole distance (hence racing at

threshold level) and is more technical (drafting allowed, transitions more important

etc).

This was also the first time I achieved the gold position and could claim to be ‘World

Champion’! And together with winning the European Championships in September,

this has been a bumper year. The closest in the past was 4th in 2012 at Aukland, New

Zealand.

The Race

Swim

My swim wave comprised some 100 swimmers of which around 30 were in my age

group. The conditions were challenging with a strong cross shore wind producing a

significant swell and difficult sighting of the buoys. The course was nearer 1000m

than the normal 750m of a sprint triathlon distance. I came out of the swim in 15 th

position and somewhere in the middle of the field. The sighting was difficult,

particularly on the outward leg with no sighting buoys for more than 400m and the

swell pushing us to the left of the optimum line. Breathing was every second stroke

due again to the side on direction of the swell. Felt a little stressed with the

challenging conditions but managed to settle down to a rhythm which got me through

this, my weakest discipline, without losing too much time.

Transition One

There was long run in from the swim to the bike in transition one, around 400m. This

suited me and with the second fastest transition I overtook several competitors. The

transition to bike went to plan with a rapid removal of my Yonda wet suit and rapid

bike mounting with the bike shoes pre-fixed to the cleats with rubber bands. Getting

the feet into the shoes while cycling could have been better though.

Bike

The 4th fastest bike time was good. The 2 lap course had one long hill and a number

of technical 180 degree turns. I only managed some sporadic drafting mostly on the

first lap. Lesson learnt here was to be in the middle of a pack, not at the back, since

if you fall off the back you will rarely be able to make up the lost distance. Felt good

but a little lacking bike fitness which can be improved.

Transition Two

Again second fastest with a good dismount and bare foot run into the transition area.

No problem finding the bike (among over 1000 bikes!) which was well marked with

my pink running shoes! Some fiddling with putting the shoes on since they are not

designed for the triathlon, however on balance a top of the range short course run

shoe (which mine are) will more than make up any lost time putting them on.

Run

The run has been my strength in recent triathlons and this one was no different being

some 30 seconds to 3 minutes faster than the nearest rivals, and allowing me to

overtake all the remaining participants and finish the overall race in gold position.

However, I was not really aware of my position only that I was overtaking fellow

runners rapidly and this in itself generates the adrenaline! Slightly worrying was my

real exhaustion in the last km of the run and I felt I had nothing more to give. Luckily

and unknown to me I was already in the lead and could perhaps have relaxed a little!

Summary

To win a World Championship, especially after winning the European Championship

four weeks before, felt amazing. The competition is fierce and there is no easy win,

so to win both major championships in the same year felt really special, an almost

surreal and once in a lifetime achievement. There is major respect from fellow

competitors and the public at large but I don’t think many really realise just how

much work goes into it! I am lucky to have a superb team of coaches and

supporters.

Thanks to Moorfoot Runners, especially our Seniors Coach, Gillian Carr, and runners

Dean, Pete, Alex, Jen, Tim, Carol and many more who have all had a massive

influence on my running fitness. This has been absolutely crucial in the above

results and it is not an exaggeration to say that being the fastest triathlon runner in

the world in the M75+ age group this year has been ‘the’ most important factor which

cements together all the other many aspects of a successful triathlete.

Thanks hugely also to Colin Hill of Ullswater Swim Place who has quickly recognised

that swimming is not my forte and identified that learning to relax in the water, as well

as swim technique at his endless pool and in Ullswater itself, are the keys to a

successful triathlon swim. I may never win a swim race but finishing without losing

too much time is important. Thank you Colin.

Crucial for any successful triathlete is to stay injury free and a major part of this for

me has been the weekly pilates with Ross Grieve. It is no coincidence that since

taking on the pilates with Ross some 2 years ago I have (touch wood!) not had any

injury, no not one, for those years, and prior to that I cannot remember such a length

of time in my 14 years of triathlon training when I have been injury free. So thank you

Ross for your skill and patience.

All triathletes, no matter their background, need a coach who can look at the bigger

picture. And Alan Cardwell of TriathlonworkX does that for me. He has known me

for most of the last 14 years, provides me with a weekly schedule, is an expert in

everything triathlon (particularly the bike), and puts up with my endless vicissitudes

of training and racing. Of course we may disagree at times (I am older but not

necessarily wiser) but he understands and we get on with it. Thank you Coach.

So that concludes my 58th triathlon in 14 years of competition and it is going to be

impossible to better it!

Club Champs Update No 18 - Monday 21st October

Congratulations to everyone who took part in Lilliesleaf 10k on Sunday. Looks like podium points go to David Carter-Brown (2nd M), Dean Carr (1st MV50), Carol Moss (1st FV5) and Coreen McGovern (3rd FV5). No takers for the Devil's Foot Half this year - clearly the lure of the Lilliesleaf soup proved too much!

So the overall standings have Carol Moss in the lead by 85 points, from Gillian Carr in second, who is 55 points clear of Coreen McGovern in 3rd. It is close after that though with David Carter-Brown, Jen Missal & Dean Carr all within touching distance of 3rd place. Special mention to Kerry Law for reaching the magic 125 point threshold this week - that's another piece of precious metal for the elves to hammer out!

Club Champs Spreadsheet

Just two events to go in the champs; Tinto Hill Race on 2nd Nov and the Glentress Trail races on 16th Nov. Last day of the champs is 17th Nov so Tweed Valley Ultra on 17th offers a potential 25 points bonus points (with an extra 10 available for anyone who is moving up a distance from their previous longest run) - just flagging that as it could be a close race for the final podium spot, or in case anyone is making a late effort for the magic 125 points.

Club Champs Update No 17 - Wednesday 16th October

Firstly, well done to everyone who took part in last night's age-graded time trial & big thanks to Gillian and the team of marshalls, timekeepers and results calculators! For the seniors the podium points went to (1) Carol Moss (2) David Carter-Brown (3) Dean Carr.

So this leaves the Championship standings as Carol Moss in first place with a lead of 70 points from Gillian Carr, who herself has a 70 point lead over Coreen McGovern in third. It is very close after that with Jen Misak just 5 points behind, closely followed by David Carter-Brown and Dean Carr

Some quality bling (pictured) arrived a spreadsheet HQ last week and following last night's Time-Trial, we now have 13 folk who have reached the Club Champs Medal threshold.🏅😎 Who else is going to reach 125 points before the end of the Champs?

Full Club Champs

Sunday sees both Devil's Foot Half & 10k (entries open until this Friday evening) and Lilliesleaf 10k (online entries still open, plus entries on the day). After that there is Tinto on 2nd Nov for those who fancy a short sharp hill run and then the final race day is Glentress Half & 10k. The champs finish on Sunday 17th which gives time for anyone who wants to do the Tweed Valley Ultra to pick up some bonus.

Club Champs Update No 16 - Monday 30th September

Two Breweries

Congratulations to Oli Jepsen, Simon Hammond, Danny Lavin, Colin Williams, Thomas Jones, Craig Walling, Alex Bain, Dorien Kimenai & Mike Goddard who all managed to make it over the hills and complete the Two Breweries race on Saturday. Some impressive times all round on what is the toughest course in the Champs this year. Shout out to Mike Goddard who was the oldest finisher and first MV75, so some hard earned podium points there.

Beyond that, there has been a steady flow of Park Run activity as we approach the closing stages of this year's Champs.

Overall Standings

No change at the top of the leader board with Carol in the lead, Gillian in second and Coreen in third. It's close behind that with 10 folk now over the Champs Medal Threshold and a similar number within a race or two of passing that mark before the end of the champs.

Next Up

The next race is The Great Scottish Half in Glasgow on Sunday, followed by the final Age Graded TT on Tuesday 15th Oct and then the choice of Lillesleaf 10k or Devil's Foot Half/10k on Sunday 20th.

Sunday 22 September 2024

Club Champs Update No 15 - Sunday 22nd September

The 22nd event in this year's Champs took place today with 5k, 10k and Half Marathon options on offer at The Wild Deer Trail event in Dalkeith.

In the half, Moorfoot Junior James Moore finished an impressive second and first male in a very quick 1:31:46. Super impressive on any course but given all the twists, turns, ups & downs that is a mighty fast time.

For the seniors Ian Munro had a great run picking up podium points for 3rd place in MV60, closely followed by Tim Warner with his canine companion. Jen Misak also started but wasn't feeling 100% so opted out of lap 2.

In the 10k there was a very strong Moorfoot performance with 4 Moorfoot finishers in what we believe were the top 8. The official results look a little wonky to some of us, and we think a tail end finisher in the 5k is currently showing as the ladies winner in the 10k!😖 The results have been appealed and I think after the "stewards enquiry" the results will show that Dean Carr finished 3rd (1st in MV50), Carol Moss was 4th (certainly 1st in FV60 and actually the First Lady minus the interloper), Martin Holt 7th and Gillian Carr 8th (1st in FV50). Coreen McGovern was 1st in FV50 and Scott Gourlay rounded up the Moorfoot team "just topping his points up"!😉
UPDATE: The results were amended as expected so Carol was indeed the winning lady and placings as above.

Aside from today's efforts, Carol Moss and Ian Munro were in action last weekend at the Sedfield Serpentine 10k with Carol winning FV60. Also David Carter-Brown had a great run at the Glencoe Marathon winning MV40.

There have been the usual selection of Park Runs etc - too numerous to mention.

So with seven events left to go in this year's Champs the standings are as follows:
Carol has a 50 point lead over Gillian in second and Coreen has overtaken Jen to move into third. David Carter-Brown has moved up significantly and is in Two Breweries action next weekend so there is still all to play for. Meanwhile the spreadsheet elves are off to work out how many Championship medals to order?😃

Next up it's The Two Breweries then the Great Scottish Half.

Club Champs Update No 14 - Friday 13th September

Well done to all those who braved a chilly Tuesday evening down at Tweedbank Track. Another amazing run from Carol Moss saw her post an age grading time of 93.00% and take maximum podium points. David Carter-Brown was fastest on the night and came second in the age grading, and the podium was completed by Neil Jackson in 3rd place for seniors (although great credit to his son David who was third in the age rankings but not eligible for Club Champs points). The other runners were Cameron Munro, Sarah Burthe, Dorien Kimenai, Andrew Fish, Sam Layton, Mark Newell and Scott Gourlay. Mark became the 54th person to register points in the Club Champs this year.

Thanks are due once again to Mike Goddard for organising and Kerry Law and Pete Caddick for timing and lap counting.

Tuesday's points mean that in the overall standings Carol Moss now has 260 points and a lead of 45 points over Gillian Carr in second with Jen Misak in 3rd on 185.

There are 8 events still to go in this year's Champs with bonus points still available for additional runs of 10k, Half-marathon, marathon & ultras for those who've not bagged these. Also don't forget there are "Team Player" points for anyone who joins a club relay team.

Next up are the Wild Deer Events in Dalkeith Country Park on Sunday 22nd with 5k, 10k and Half Marathons all available. It looks like they are still taking entries.

Club Champs Update No 13 - Tuesday 20th August

[Notice the subliminal product placement for those yet to put their kit order in 😉]

So limited action to report in the Champs this week and much of it already covered by Dean.

Carol Moss was first lady at the Abbotsford Trail race continuing her fantastic form to pick up another 15 bonus points and take her lead out to 25 points.

Coreen McGovern had a great run at the Scottish Half, also collecting 15 points for her efforts.

Ewan Gibson completed the challenging Borrowdale Half, to collect his extra 15 points.

Alex Bain (nee Campbell) is this week's highest climber though completing the Half Marathon Karusellen (near Bergen) and picking up bonus points for being 3rd lady, to boost her total by 20 points and close in on the magic 125 Club Champs Medal.

Latest standings are:

Club Champs Update No 12 - Sunday 11th August

Cademuir Rollercoaster

First up a big shout out to Gregor Nicholson for another fine effort organising the Cademuir Rollercoaster. It all went very smoothly (it's almost like he's done it before 😉) with a big thanks to all those who helped with registration, marshalling, timekeeping and the like. A very fine club effort - thanks folks!

In the junior 3k race there was a great club showing with an encouraging number of our juniors in action.

With the 6k also doubling as a national selection race for the juniors, we had many of the country's top juniors in action, consequently only one senior made the top 12 finishers (Lauderdale's Marc Wilkinson). The top 3 were the same as last year but in a different order with our own Thomas Hilton in 3rd. The standard was very high with all 3 inside last year's winning time. James Moore was the second Moorfoot home comfortably inside the half-hour mark. This high standard made for an entertaining few minutes at the "Cademuir Crossroads" with the lead runners coming down ahead of the later runners heading up creating some mind-focussing marshalling moments (a career in air traffic control is not for me!)

For the seniors, Andy Cox was 4th Male Vet, a minute ahead of Scott Lindsay 5th Snr Male & Craig Walling 5th Male Vet. Jen Misak had a great run, finishing 2nd Female Vet, having also done registration earlier. Fee Hodgkiss was definitely the happiest looking runner on the hill today and Scott Gourlay's prize for sticking with it, is passing the 125 point threshold to become the 6th to claim a Club Champs Medal. Well done all - it was a warm day for it.

Elsewhere

At the Oxton Fair Race, Carol Muir was first lady home with Cameron Munro making it a family affair finishing second male. Well done both of you!

We've also had the usual plethora of Park Run activity - well done on these folks both running and volunteering.

Standings

The win at Oxton Fair has taken Carol clear at the top, with Gillian second and Jen having closed the gap after a high-scoring Cademuir of registration, running and getting podium points. Coreen has scored highly for Park Runs and volunteering and is up to 4th. Andrew Fish is in 5th and Scott Gourlay 6th. Full details in the spreadsheet link.

Next up in the Champs is the Scottish Half & 10k next Sunday -18th August.

Sunday 4 August 2024

Club Champs Update No 11 - Sunday 4th August

It's neck and neck at the top of the leader board following this week's 10km Age Graded TT plus a selection of Park Run activity. Carol Moss and Gillian Carr are joint leaders level on 185 points, with Jen Misak in 3rd on 160 points.

Congratulations to Andrew Fish and Coreen McGovern who were the latest to pass the magic 125 point Club Champs Medal threshold and lie joint 4th.

There are 10 races left in this year's champs including 5 half marathons and the Two Breweries. Next up is Cademuir Rollercoaster on Sunday 11th August followed by the Scottish Half on 18th August.

It is looking like it is going to be a very tight race this year and could it come down to the final day of the Champs - Tweed Valley Ultra on offer that day with a tempting 25 bonus points available to break the deadlock? (Oooh)

Friday 26 July 2024

Two Breweries Recce

Last Saturday a few keen Moorfooters took on a recce of the Two Breweries hill race route. Alex, Dorien and Mike who have signed up for the race in September were keen to familiarise themselves with the 18 mile route, while Ewan and myself (Gillian) went along for a fun day out and remind ourselves why we didn’t enter the race ;-)

This year sees the 40th anniversary of the iconic race which starts at the Traquair Brewery (Traquair House ) and finishes at Broughton Brewery. Covering 18 miles (30km) over the hills with 4900ft (1500m) ascent it’s not for the faint hearted! Add to that the pressure of a self navigated course with 8 time controlled checkpoints on the hill tops!

A recce is a must for this race with landscapes changing throughout the year with forests being felled, deer fences erected, roads built, and ferns, heather & bogs all adding their own challenges!

Alex had suggested a recce at a nice social pace, so 5 of us gathered at the Bear Gates at 9am smiling and full of enthusiasm as the weather looked good for the first part of the day at least!

Checking the OS map and strava route from a previous recce we headed off the road from Traquair into the hills. A nice steep farm track to warm the calves up, we tackled tricky farm gates, squelchy cow fields & waist high ferns before our first main hilltop of Birkscairn hill. Sometimes the downhill is worse than going up and with the view of the valley of Glensax and Hundleshope Heights on the other side, we had to gingerly make our way down through the heather past the grouse buts to the river, then slog all the way back up to Hundleshope!

Carrying on to Stob Law, the view from here was fantastic, seeing the entire length of the Pentlands, Arthur’s Seat and even Fife!

After the descent to Glenrath Farm, and the Manor Valley Road we were then into an area of tree felling on a massive scale! The route up through the trees to the checkpoint on Whitelaw hill seemed totally inaccessible, so we followed the drovers road and a new forest road up to the gate at Dead Wife’s grave. We weren’t too sure where the race route would go, so maybe another wee recce of this bit will be needed!?
I normally look forward to a downhill, but the descent down towards Stobo was another tough one and by this time I think we were all beginning to flag.
We were well past the halfway point by now though and with time pressing on, we were encouraged that we just had one more big hill to come, albeit Trahenna - the biggest of them all! The other thing pushing us on was the thought that the cafe in Broughton shut at 5:00 giving us just 2 hours! (Thankfully I’d taken the car to Broughton the night before so didn’t have the added pressure of having to make the 5:00 bus! )

A steady slog up past Stobo castle and Loch you are then faced with the sight of Trahenna and the choice of routes up to the top. Perhaps we took the wrong choice, but bogs, ferns & deer fences made our ascent more difficult than it should have been. Another bit to revisit another day to perfect the right route :-)

But we made it to the top nonetheless and were rewarded with the welcome sight of Broughton village down below.
The chance of making the cafe now was getting slim as we hit 4:30pm, but with 4G signal at the top of the hill we made the emergency call to the cafe getting in our orders for drinks & scones!

Spurred on by this thought it was then just a case of tip-toing down the sheer face of Trahenna and sprinting along the long straight tarmac road to the Laurelbank cafe! As luck would have it, the cafe was catering for a function that night and let us sit in for our very well earned cuppas & scone & jam!

It  had been a long hard day, but a good one! The rain stayed away, we had no accidents (other than a cut finger on a gate and a bit of cramp), we never got lost, never gave up, and didn’t fall out with each other 😂 All in all a great challenging day out in the local hills, and good chance to test out our stamina, willpower and navigational skills!

Good luck and greatest respect to Alex, Dorien, and Mike, and anyone else doing the race on 28 September, it’s one I’ll be happy to support from the sidelines ;-)

Entries are still open on Entry Central if you fancy it?! More details on https://twobreweries.org.uk/

Thank you Alex for organising, and all for a lovely day :-)

Monday 22 July 2024

Club Champs Update No 10 - Monday 22nd July

First up, many congratulations to Andy Cox and Colin Williams for great runs at Lee Pen. Both have been stalwarts of this demanding race over recent years. Andy finished 3rd (2nd vet) in 30:16 and Colin 5th (4th vet) in 32:04, to claim 10 points a piece plus bonus points for Andy. Well done gents. [I may need to up the points allocation to increase the representation for future years]. Nods of respect too, go to Scott Gourlay for marshalling and to the team who ran in memory of Craig Angus. Well done guys.

Beyond that, Coreen McGovern had a fine run at the Musselburgh 10k picking up points for that.

On the Park Run front Carol Moss, Jen Misak, Milan Misak and Scott Gourlay all logged points for running or volunteering.

So at the end of Month 4 of the champs, with 18 events down and 11 still to go, it is VERY close at the top with just 5 points separating the top 3 of Gillian, Carol and Jen. Andrew Fish leads the group of chasers, who look poised to pass the 125 point Champs Medal Threshold soon.

Club Champs Spreadsheet

Next up in the champs we have the 10k Time Trial on 1st August & Cademuir Rollercoaster on Sunday 11th August. Volunteers being sought for both of those please.

Also on Sunday 18th august is the Scottish Half. Places still available (price increase a week today) for this very fast course (first 5.5 miles downhill then flat).

Saturday 13 July 2024

Club Champs Update No 9 - Sat 13th July

A fairly busy week so updates on events, latest standings, date changes, next events & the eliminator!

Kelso 10k - A strong Moorfoot turnout this morning with the team narrowly pipped to the team prize by Gala [Note to selves - we can beat them next year!] Carol Moss was first Moorfoot home, second lady and 1st FV60. Colin Sandie was next home completing his first 10k in several years with a very strong run. Martin Holt, Mike Goddard, Kerry Law, Scott Gourlay, Ian Munro and Andrew Fish were the other Moorfoots with some fine runs all round on the a very varied course. A fine buffet followed thanks to the efforts of the local ladies fundraising for Cancer Research. Carol picks up bonus points for FV60 win and other podium points may be awarded as and when I can find a full set of results. 😉

Moffat Gala Race - Dorien Kimenai, Ewan Gibson, Sam Layton, Tim Warner & Fee Hodgkiss all braved the weather for the traditional 9 mile Tuesday night run. Well done all. Top marks also to Pete Caddick for providing excellent away support on an inclement evening.

Eildon Black Hill Race - This has already been reported on BUT the results on the Scottish Hill Runners website have now been updated to include age categories (although not necessarily the correct ones - a view shared by others). I've awarded podium points retrospectively based on those results, adjusted for known errors. Half of the 12 Moorfoots participating have thus picked up podium points.

Overall Standings

It is now very tight at the top with Gillian still top, Carol second, having closed to within just 10 points of Gillian and Jen in third. Andrew Fish is fourth leading a group of folk who are into three figures and closing in on the 125 point threshold.

Full Spreadsheet

Date Changes
(1) The 5km Time Trial that was originally scheduled for this Tuesday has been moved to 10th September.
(2) Lilliesleaf 10k has moved back a week to 20th October and is back once again clashing with Devil's Foot Half and 10k so there are 3 races to choose from that day.

Next Events
- Lee Pen is next up on Saturday 20th July. A generous 10 points on offer for a 3 mile race! 😉
- The Northumberland Coastal Half is Sunday 21st but entries closed without any Moorfoot representation.
- Age graded 10k Time Trial on Thursday 1st August.

The Eliminator!
- "What's this?" they cried, "Is this new?" Nope. This is the Club Champs which means you need to be in the club. The spreadsheet elves have sent out many reminders (which gets a bit boring tbh), and so from 1st August only club members who have renewed their membership will be included in the champs. Thankfully most folk have diligently done this, but for anyone who recognises 29/4/83, 7/10/85 or 28/9/77 as a significant date, please check your email or that of your significant other & renew if you intend to remain in the club (champs).

Wednesday 3 July 2024

Club Champs Update No 8 - Wednesday

The main action of the last week has been at two events:

At the Lairig Ghru Race on Sunday Andy Cox, Dorien Kimenai and Heather Young all completed this classic Cairngorm route in excellent conditions. At fractionally over marathon distance they all picked up 20 bonus points.

Last night the Earlston Black Hill Race had a very strong Moorfoot representation making up over 20% of the field. The dozen strong contingent comprising David Carter-Brown, Carol Moss (2nd Female), Alex Campbell (3rd Female), Mike Goddard, Coreen McGovern, Jen Misak, Neil Jackson, Vicky Morrison, Ian Munro, Sarah Burthe, Andrew Fish & Scott Gourlay. Bonus podium points to Carol and Alex for 2nd and 3rd Female respectively. I am not seeing any age category classifications for this modest sized field but if anyone can evidence results with these on we can re-evaluate bonus podium points! ;-)

So the position at the top of the table is Gillian still in the lead with Jen in 2nd and Carol in 3rd, with all 3 reaching the Champs Medal Threshold. It is then very tight with just 20 points separating 4th to 11th place.

Full Club Champs Spreadsheet

Next up we have the Moffat Gale Race next Tuesday and the Kelso 10k on Saturday 13th July. Both cracking events.

Also worth flagging that as yet no one has claimed any "Team Player" points for a Moorfoot Relay Team. So, just a wee plug for Run The Borders should anyone fancy pulling together a team to do the Borders Abbey Way on 24th August as a relay team?

Sunday 23 June 2024

Club Champs Update No 7 - Sunday 23rd June

After 12 weeks and 12 events we now have a clear leader in the 2024 Club Champs. Gillian Carr continued her current good form to finish 2nd female in there 2 Pubs race on Tuesday evening and then backed that up with a 2nd in FV40 at the Black Rock 5, throwing in a Park Run yesterday morning to complete a 35 point week, and with it taking her lead out, also to 35 points.

Gillian also becomes the first person to clear the 125 points threshold and thus qualify for the prestigious Club Champs Medal (ooooh!).

David Carter-Brown was also in action at the 2 Pubs and claimed 2nd in the mens race. Dean, Andrew Fish plus Mike & Coreen McGovern were also at the 2 Pubs, but as not a Champs race, points only for podium finishers. (Much lobbying to get this race added to the 2025 Champs has been noted).

On Friday evening, some 1,100 runners took on the Black Rock 5 which sold out in staggeringly quick time. In addition to Gillian, Dean Carr and Sarah Burthe were quick enough to get an entry in and bag 10 points a piece.

Yesterday was the Eildon 3 Hill Race, which was won by our own Thomas Hilton. Thomas is still a junior but take note he will be eligible for the 2025 Champs (I'll be heading down to Labrokes shortly). Spare a thought for Lauderdale Limpers' Marc Wilkinson who once again found himself looking at Thomas's back from a distance of 100 meters to finish second. Great runs from other Moorfoots including Andy Cox 2nd MV40, Mike Goddard winning MV70 with Paul Nichol and Scott Gourlay completing the Moorfoot cohort.

A retrospective shout out to Colin Williams for his phenomenal Erwald Trail Ultra in the Alps and a very well earned 25 points for that.

There has also been much Park Run activity - too numerous to mention individually.

So the top of the table has Gillian in the lead followed by Jen Misak in 2nd, Carol Moss in 3rd with Andrew Fish and Coreen McGovern in joint 4th.

Sunday 16 June 2024

Club Champs Update No 6 - Sunday 16th June

A modest number of updates since last week, but significant ones in the overall standings.

Gillian Carr and Dorien Kimenai both took on the Edinburgh 7 Hills Race today with Gillian claiming 1st FV40 and winning a nice piece of Edinburgh rock for her efforts as well as 15 bonus podium points.

This means that we have join leaders in the champs now with Gillian Carr and Jen Misak both on 115 points, Carol Moss on 100 and Fee Hodgkiss is up to 4th on 85 having bagged some more Park Run points.

Scott Gourlay was the only other person to bag points this week again with some Park Run activity.

Next weekend we have Black Rock 5 (Friday) and Eildon Hill Race (Saturday). Then it's Earlston Black Hill Race the week after and followed by Moffat Gala Race (15km) and the Kelso 10k on Sat 13th (Note the date change to Saturday this year).

Club Champs Update No 5 - Sunday 9th June

End of Week 10 - With no Champs races since the last update it has been an opportunity to pick up bonus points with people doing everything from Park Runs to Ultras, and we have a new name at the top of the Club Champs Leaderboard....

Jen Misak - Did the Strathearn Marathon today picking up 3rd FV40 in blustery conditions. Add in a couple of Park Runs and Jen's tally increases by 35 points taking her to a table topping 115 and moving ahead of Carol in 2nd place.

Fee Hodgkiss picked up a couple of sets of Park Run points to move into joint 3rd with Gillian

Tim Warner & Ewan Gibson (pictured) both completed a very warm 60km Cairngorm Ultra last weekend, taking Tim up to 75 points to join Alex Campbell and Andrew Fish in joint 5th place.

Club News.

The club has been busy this weekend with members running in the Stornoway half marathon, and closer to home the Wobbly Bridge Race in St Boswells and the Edinburgh Marathon Festival.  Martin has done a good write up in the club champs blog which you can read about here:

Wobbly Bridge race results:

Peter Caddick has done a write up of the Stornoway weekend on the clubs Facebook page.

Track taster night 11 June 7:15 pm.
We are holding a training session on the running track at Tweedbank on the 11th June.  This will be a taster session to introduce members to what its like to run on a track.  If it proves to be popular we plan to run some more track sessions over the summer.  If you would like to come or want more information please let me know.

Club Memberships.
A gentle reminder to members that this year's membership fees are due and can be paid via Entry Central.

Club Vision working group.
The committee would like views from the membership on what they would like from our running club.  It would be great if we could get a small group together to discuss this and help the committee to form a vision for the club.  If you are interested, please let me know.  No one has come forward thus far.  It's a great opportunity to get involved.

Club kit working group.
The club are looking to partner with a sports clothing manufacturer to offer a range of club apparel via an online store.  If anyone would like to be involved in this please get in touch.  Again, no one has come forward for this.  A great opportunity to help design our club apparel.

Mental Health Awareness.
For those who took part in the 1st Headstrong mental health in sport session, there is a 2nd session focusing more on Suicide awareness.  It is advised that only those who attended the first workshop attend the second due to it being informed level training. It is proposed to hold this on Wednesday 12th June. Venue TBC.
