Moorfoots at Jedburgh Running Festival 2013

With the weather forecasters keeping a close eye on 'Hurricane Jude" as it tracked towards southern Britain, this was always going to be a windy one - well actually, from my memory, the Jedburgh event is always a windy one. So with no PBs threatening, it was case of getting on with it and toughing it out....

10K
Darin and Kenny
Good to see Darin back after some injury niggles and an extended layoff - not that it showed in a strong 36:51
Kenny 41:18 - disappointed initially to be above 40 mins, but ended up better placed than 2012 (24th) and paced it well, gaining one place and not being overtaken on the last 6K (into the wind !)

Paul in a rich vein of form this year, and another strong performance (1:33:37) in less than ideal conditions.

Moorfoots at Run of the Mill Hill Race 2013

Run Of the Mill Race at Alva (14.5km, 850m)

First time I have done this race and would thoroughly recommend it for those who like a medium length,  fast and furious style hill race.

Starts in Alva with a series of steps out of the glen leading to a fast traverse on forest tracks towards Tillicoultry. Things then get a bit tougher with a steep and relentless climb up Andrew Gannel hill, followed by some great running on the Ochil tops over Ben Cleuch and Ben Ever. What then follows is one of the best descents I can remember on grassy slopes back into the Alva glen, a bit precarious coming down the wet steps with tried legs but a great finish.

Weather was wild and visibility was zero for most of the hill work.  Big turnout (180runners), I found the start pace too much but gradually worked my way back and finished 71st (1hr 34mins), Ex Moorfoot Mike Reid finished 3rd in 1hr 15mis.

 cheers

Eddie

Taking Orders for Moorfoot Club Vests

Former Moorfoot 'pin up boy' modeling the vest
Orders are being collected for Moorfoot running vests, the traditional red and blue diagonal harlequin design, with MOORFOOT in white lettering on the front.

These will be available in Childrens, Mens and Ladies sizes and will be £10 per vest
(this is a subsidized charge to Club Members)

Sizing is based on chest size, but please consider if you like it 'loose and baggy' or 'super streamlined'; do you usually wear it over another top, or do you run with bare flesh exposed; for children, will they grow out of a small size in a few months etc etc.

There are x15 sizes covering Children, Ladies and Men to choose from.....

There will be very little stock held, so if you do not order in this round, you may need to wait until a future order, the time or date of which will depend on demand (we have a minimum order size and we are a very small club !!!)

Please input your orders to the Doodle Poll below by Sunday 3-November, such that the order can be consolidated and placed with our supplier:

http://www.doodle.com/9tqxxwsh8igm9mdk

Money will be collected when vests are collected, following delivery from our supplier.

Please pass the word round to fellow Moorfoot runners, although you will be informed by email also through the week.

Note again that we need to capture all orders by Sunday 3-November - delivery from supplier expected late January 2014 - further updates in January once we get updates on our batch fulfillment.

Antonine Trail Run

Mike McGovern and I headed to Croy between Kilysth and Cumbernauld for the Antonine Trail Race. Without a shadow of a doubt Mike would have won it but the course was hard to follow with so many twists and turns and lost the lead about 3 times taking wrong turns. I stuggled a couple of times too.

There was a group of 5 of us leading for a large part of the race with me being the back marker and kept getting dropped and then coming back into contact when they slowed when someone went wrong. I got properly dropped at about mile 9 and then I could see Mike in second just behind first but then at the bottom of the last hill Mike went straight on and run for about 1/2 mile before turning so he came in 6th and I was 4th.

Nice course though if you didn't get lost. I took 1.36 for 13.75 hilly and muddy miles.

I've copied the below from the website:

156 runners toed the line for the 2nd running of Adventure Zone Scotland’s Antonine Trail Race on Sunday. The run starts in the village of Croy and loops through Croy Hill, into Kilsyth and across Drumbreck Marsh before two killer summits at Barr Hill and back up Croy Hill to finish.
It is 90% trail with only three small tarmac sections. The rest is pretty runnable tow path, forest trails and grass paths. However, where grass is involved there is mud, especially in Scotland, and after three days of incessant rain there were a few potentially shoe-stealing mud spots that thankfully didn’t claim any victims.
On the day the weather was cool and mainly dry with only a couple of notable squalls threatening to dishearten the participants stretched out around the course. This was a welcome relief as the talk before the race was of the potential underfoot conditions, with the overhead being of almost secondary importance.

Aviemore Half, Manor Hill Race and Loch Ness Marathon

Fi ran in the increasingly popular Aviemore Half Marathon today and had a cracking race and finished within two mins of her (pre-kids) PB in 1hr37.57 and was 12th Senior Woman and 142nd out of 840 finishers overall. Results here:
http://www.aviemorehalfmarathon.org/Pages/Results.html

I've done a couple of races recently taking Lawrence's entry for Loch Ness Marathon which was a fortnight ago. I've got another excuse (I picked up an ankle injury after Haddington Half Marathon and couldn't train properly for about 3 and a half weeks until about 3 weeks to go) and the big sub 3 eluded me again, coming home in 3h02.16. I know have a collection of times - 3hrs0, 3.02, 3.03, 3.05, 3.07 so maybe it's time to move on?!

I also did Manor Hill Race yesterday, the only other Moorfoot taking part was Lucas Cheskin who quickly disappeared out of my view as soon as the hill started to kick in. Lucas finished in 8th place in 1.17.50 but chatting after he said he struggled in the long relentless downhill, dropping a position on the way down.
Lucas in full flow

Mine was a different story and felt a bit heavy legged on the climb getting passed throughout, however once we turned I got into a strong rhythm on the decent was able to pass 6 people on the descent and finished in 12th place in 1.19.59 which was over 5 mins quicker than last year.

Moorfoots at Skyline 2013

I was trying to redeem something from the season after such a poor result at the 2 Breweries so decided to gamble everything on the Pentland Sykline.  Met Andrew Cox on the start line (and no surprise that was the last I saw of him).  Weather was drizzle with low cloud which proved ideal for running (if you knew the route well). This is an increasingly  popular race with a large field of around 200 entries this year.

I managed to surprise myself by not falling to pieces and finished in 3:20 (57th). Andrew had an excellent result in 2:53 (16th). One (top 10) runner was disqualified for not having the required safety kit with him at the finish!  A great race !
