Gala Harriers 10k race report

Report from Katrin, Scott's wife:
Three Moorfoot runners, Darin Dougal, Scott McDonald, and Alan Elder ran the Gala Harriers race on Sunday. It was an absolutely gorgeous day for it with temperatures around 20 degrees celsius. The race was a 2 lap course starting and ending on the track of Tweedbank Sports Centre. The field was fast and competitive, with a lot of Gala Harriers as well as other local running clubs taking part. Darin came 9th with a time of 37:29 (2nd M40), Scott was 11th with a time of 37:58 (4th M40). Alan came 27th place in a time of 44:14 (6th M40). Full results here: http://galaharriers.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Race-results-10k-8th-May-2016.pdf
Apart from the 10k race there was also a 3k race; a lot of the juniors took part in the 3k race and then helped at the finish of the 10k race, handing out medals, water and bananas. The beautiful weather had attracted quite a few spectators, and the atmosphere was very friendly. A good race was had by all.

Scottish Championship Gold for Beth - silvers for Mairi and Ethan

Fantastic news from Ben Lomond today where Beth Hobbs (right) claimed the Scottish U15 Girls hill race championship title with a resounding win, leading from gun to tape on the uphill only 2.1km course.

And there were silver medals too for both Mairi Wallace in the U17 Women's race over 2.8km uphill only, just being outgunned in the final stretch by North District XC champ Grace Whelan, and Ethan Elder in the 2.1km U15 Boys race. Showing improved form from the East Lomond race two weeks ago, Ethan led until inside the final 100m when he was just ousted from the gold medal position by one of the MacWhinnie boys from Fife AC.

Stuc a' Chroin

A trip to Strathyre at the weekend saw a brace of Moorfoots (Alan E and Eddie) out on the heathery hills of Glen Ample. The run starts from a new location further on in the town. It was a great atmosphere around the starting area, old hands and new discussing how deep the snow may be on top - deep enough it turned out!

The run up to the top of Strathyre Forest was tough going with much of a marsh and bog on the way.
The descent into Glen Ample was mighty steep and gave the quads something to think about. Once at the bottom (where the road is in the pic below) it was a daunting thought that the hill had to be rescaled in order to get back on to the downhill, homeward 5k.

The climb up Beinn Each (Each = Gaelic for 'horse') was very hard going - a mare you might say and my calves were saddled with unbridled nagging pains all the way to the top (puns over!) Heading up the hill to the right, the route cuts over the ridge along the tops to 'The Stuc' on the left of the pic.
It is a brutal climb that involves grasping at heather or dragging yourself up by an old wire fence. After a tough climb into the snowline, there is a great deal of technical (very dangerous) rock hopping, climbing, scrambling, face-plant avoidance, body sledging and generally trying to avoid being flown off the hill.

Nearing the summit, I spot Eddie on his way down - looking fresh - or perhaps that was the passing blizzard reddening up his cheeks! Some time after I am on top and am invited for a photo with a Lomond Hills runner. Post-snap he declares he is struggling and asks me to buddy him down. Part of me wants to adhere to 'the code' but part of me wants to romp off down the hill. After a couple of kms, a potential compromise presents itself and I spot a Penicuik Harrier taking her time and she kindly offers to buddy the chap back in. I am then off in pursuit of Luis from Lauderdale. I catch up to him and we decide to run in together.

The exit of Glen Ample (that harmless, little upward line below, before the 15.0 marker) is mainly an uphill grunting exercise - a real struggle. Luis has given me a honey and peanut butter sandwich to fight the cramps. It's munched on the ascent and soon the final 5k can be undertaken. On the profile below it looked like a nice whiz down hill - but not so - 500 shoes had churned it up and we spend a lot time knee-deep in rotting vegetation.

Final stretch down hill was dry and the cramps were kicking in - a wee dash to the line, a few handshakes and pics and off into the massage tent, meaning I miss my fish supper in Callendar. Great camaraderie and encouragement all the way round and enjoyed the haul back to the finish with Luis. Next time, Mr Molero,  no more Mr Nice Guy!!

Really well marshaled and lots of water and Jelly Babies.

I managed round in 4h 17 mins - happy enough with my effort given that recent hill training consisted of a jaunt up Gypsy Glen the previous Wednesday.

Eddie scooted round in 3h 37mins.

At the finish with, Damon, Michael, Luis and Badger the Superdog (I'm the one without the tail)

Next year..? Perhaps....

Three Bridges hat-trick

It used to be the case that Moorfoot winners in the Three Bridges races were like hens’ teeth but on Sunday, Sophie Collins made it three in a row in the open 3-mile handicap, albeit this year donning the green vest of Edinburgh Uni. But her blood runs red and blue, so we’ll claim it as a Moorfoot win.

Right in the midst of her 2nd year exams Sophie said before the race that she was just out for a break from her studies and to cheer on wee sis Madeline in the Primary girls’ race, but she set off at a good clip, looking like she was out to improve on last year’s third place when she was caught inside the final 400m by the young Moorfoot guns Ben Hindley and Sam McNeill, both of whom were also back for another go.

Having been set off seventh runner by the handicapper in a healthy field of twenty four, a third of which were from Teviotdale Harriers, Sophie was up to second as she went through the bell (as if anyone needed reminding that they had one lap to go) but with a determined looking Alex Corbett from Teviotdale still close behind and moving well. Backmarkers Ben Hindley and Rory Anderson were powering through the field at an impressive pace but still had significant ground to make up on the second lap. By this time Sam McNeill had unfortunately had to call it a day having been struggling recently with a chest infection.

Heading back towards Tweed Bridge and Sophie, as last year, had hit the front and she emerged into view through the railway tunnel with a 40m lead on old man Corbett, but by now he’d lost his flow, looking like he had lead in his shoes. Then flying round the corner came unknown woman (will update when the official results are out!), eyes fixed firmly on the two ahead. If Kenny and the Silver Band playing on Tweed Green had struck up the theme from Jaws at this point it would have been fitting. Would Sophie have enough left in the tank to avoid being gobbled up again?

Onto Priorsford Bridge, unknown woman had closed to within 30m, but Sophie was strong on the final run to the line off the bridge, actually extending her lead again with an impressive sprint down Tweed Green to hit the tape a clear winner. Alex Corbett held on for third.

Ben put up a brave effort in defending his title and ran well for 6th off a much-reduced handicap compared to last year.

There was a healthy Moorfoot entry for the Youths’ handicap and despite the attentions of the handicapper after his victory last year Ethan Elder again romped away with it, blasting through the field of fourteen from the back to establish a lead well before the return to Tweed Bridge. Finlay Collins pipped Beth Hobbs for the runners-up spot with Mairi Wallace 6th, Charlotte Morrison 7th, Eilidh Mooney 8th and Maxwell Drummond 9th.

Plenty of good showings too from junior Moorfoots in the Primary School races, winners being Esme Minto and Murray Aiken.

London Marathon 2017 Ballot for entry just opened until 5pm Friday 6 May

The ballot for entry for the London Marathon on 23 April 2017 has just opened and closes on Friday. Details here: Ballot Entry

It is the premier marathon in Britain and a real experience for everyone I know who has taken part.

The club is guaranteed a place each year but it order to be fair there is policy in place to allocate it. the following factors are considered:
> Have they been a member for more than 12 months
> Have they been not been awarded the club place in the previous 2 years
> Have they unsuccessfully tried to enter via the ballot and not eligible for a good for age place (entry for which opens later in the year https://www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com/en-gb/how-to-enter/good-age-entry/ )

So this is a heads up for anyone wanting to enter London

Cheers, Colin
