Peebles Outdoor Film Festival Run with Nicky Spinks to White Meldon

As part of the Peebles Outdoor Film Festival there was a run with Nicky Spinks -

In May 2016, the inspirational Nicky Spinks made fell running history by becoming the fastest person to run a Double Bob Graham Round. The 49-year-old cancer-survivor marked 10 years post-diagnosis by running the 132-mile Lake District route, which included around 54,000ft of ascent, in a time of 45 hours and 30 minutes. Nicky previously held the woman's records for the three classic hill running records in England, Scotland (overall record) and Wales before Jasmin Paris broke them all in 2016. You can watch her film in full here online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ABR30IHlq4

The run unfortunately clashed with the Peebles Cross Country but 4 Moorfoots were able to act as guides and helpers on the run - Colin, Kenny, Pete and Rosie, accompanied by Nicky and 8 others. The 9 route went over to White Meldon via Neidpath and back via Hamilton Hill. Route: https://www.strava.com/activities/848270834
We lucked out on the weather compared to the day before and some very good feedback from those taking part.

Feel the Burns 2017

The 4th edition of Feel the Burns was the muddiest and wettiest by far with the massive overnight thaw turning the course into a mud/slushfest - so comparatively slow times although somehow the course record was beaten by Mark Sutherland of Glasgow Uni/Lauderdale Limpers. This is how the Carnethy report described it:
"The 4 foot deep snow of 2 days ago melted away to leave equally remarkable morasses of mud and paths turned to rivers. Cold ones. The normally fast field descents turned into the grassy equivalent of ice. There were many… no other way of saying it… skidmarks. The actual river wade scarcely wetter than the surroundings."

The race was also doubling as the Moorfoot Winter Championships won by Jacob Adkin.
Results not out at time of writing but Jacob Adkin had a stormer to finish 3rd as first Moorfoot, the day after a strong run at the East XC League race at Broxburn. Next Moorfoot home was Darin Dougal, then Colin Williams, Mike McGovern (who had run together for about 2/3rds), Pete Hall, Alan Elder, Scott McDonald.

Darin, Mike and Colin may have been a long way off the pointy end of the race but we filled the podium when it came to getting to the haggis and tattie pies opting for the pies before showers!

Jacob Adkin running the number on the vest says No.1 - 1st Moorfoot home by a country mile.

New Years Run to the top of the Moorfoots

A good turnout today for the run to the top of the Moorfoots - Windlestraw Law at 659m.  12 boggy miles and over 1,100m (3,700 feet) of climb. Route here
Starting the run
The air temperature was relatively mild - about 6 degrees as we started in the valley compared to sub zero yesterday, however the weather up top was very very windy up on the summit ridge so the chill made it very cold.

Five Stars for Burnside Cafe'

Along with an number of weary Moorfoot Runners (some suffering from too much Christmas and New Year) We stumbled, as my legs would not carry me further, into the quaint Burnside Cafe near to The Cuddy Bridge in Innerleithen.

A bridge called Cuddy Bridge near the Burnside Cafe'
We were met by head waiter Austen Williams and shown to our seats. Drinks orders were quickly taken and were soon delivered by Austen and his co-worker Alice Williams.

Along with the delicious drinks, we were treated to scones, shortbread, mince pies and brownies (provided by Lucy).

Both Alice and Austen managed to keep up with the hungry runners chomping through all their food - and not once did they complain about how dirty and wet they looked or how badly they smelled!

For these reasons I must award them 5 stars - Well Done!
