Ross Grieve and Richard Edge did the Jedburgh Three Peaks Ultramarathon on Saturday consisting of 37.2 off road and sometimes very hilly miles. There were 220 runners and expert Ross finished on the M50 podium in 3rd (15th overall, 6:25:06)and Richard completed his ultra in a very respectable 54th place (7:18:35). Results here Big congratulations both.
Here's Richard's summary:
My first ultra
Jedburgh is a very long town. It doesn’t feel so long as you start out, however on the way home the run to the abbey took forever!
The first 19 miles, apart from the ‘mud shoot’, to the bottom of the Eildon’s is a nice steady run along the Tweed and St Cuthberts way.
After the hills, it’s a nice trail through the forest towards Bowden and the compulsory shot on the shoot in the play park (mud covered running shoes, slippery wood and metal - could have happily side stepped that)
Checkpoint 4 in Maxton is around the 28 mile mark and into time and distance I had never been to before and I found the last 10 or so a real slog...nothing a bit more training won’t solve.
Finishing was important to me, as the day was almost 12 years since my haemorrhage. Wheel chair to ultra in 12 years. To think I hated running for anything other than a ball
