Report by Ali Hilton:
Todd Crag, Loughrigg Fell Ambleside.
On Saturday 3rd September, three Junior Moorfoots raced in Ambleside.
Thomas Hilton was running as part of the Scotland Team after a successful selection race a few weeks prior. He was joined on the day by Moorfoot Juniors Luke Grieve and James Moore.
This route started and finished in Rothay Park and crossed 2 bridges straight away, meaning a fast start was essential to avoid the bottlenecks. Thomas was in 3rd place and held this position strongly all the way up to the top of the hill. Undulating open fell formed the next part of the route before a craggy turn. It was here that Thomas was overtaken and couldn’t regain his place on the following downhill. This was rough and rocky in parts before returning to the slippery tarmac descent into the park. It was a brilliant effort and saw Thomas finishing in 5th place with a time of 21m50s. He was 13seconds behind Rowan Taylor (Lasswade) who finished in 3rd place for Team Scotland.
The other team members finished in 18th and 23rd position, giving Team Scotland the Silver medal 🥈
James and Luke ran the route without any advantage of a recce the day before. They both gave their all and fully enjoyed the experience. James finished in 33rd (26.02) and Luke in 36th (26.10).
Flags, medals and lots of photographs followed in the awards afterwards. It was a brilliant mini Moorfoots Club weekend with great family involvement and apparently it’s going to become an annual event!
